When do we want them? As early and as frequent as possible, please. Most people seem to be predicting a cautious and possibly dour affair with the prospect of it ending in a penalty shoot-out.
Lets hope not.
2. "Still Ricky Villa..."
If we are going to have goals, lets have a corker, the sort of goal that will make me spill my pint.
A memorable one, in the mould of the mazey Ricky Villa goal of '81. Or that goal by Steve McKenzie also of '81. Or Gerrard's amazing long shot from last year's cup Final.
3. No controversy.
No Drogba diving. No Rooney sending off. No Scholes being ginger. No handbags from Mourinho and Ferguson. No referee trying to make a name for himself. No Lampard sporting a 'goatie' beard. No pies for sale under £10.
I dont think we're asking for too much.
And then there's the three wishes of our old friend, Kedge, who goes for the following:
1. Man. Utd. not just to win, but to absolutely stuff Chelsea.
2. A really good-looking female streaker to run onto the pitch at half-time
and for the TV cameras to zoom in on her.
3. José to get hold of a microphone, stand in the middle of the pitch and
apologise to the whole world for being such a prat.
Not a lot to ask for there is it?
Indeed not, Kedge. It's our right as one of the worldwide audience of 1 billion to ask for such things and, dammit, we'll be really rather peeved if they aren't brought to us in large quantities.
Our thanks go to Kedge for helping us out this time around. On Wednesday, to celebrate the Champions League Final, we'll be asking for your Three Wishes for Michel Platini, UEFA President.
Are there any decisions you'd like to see him make? Any issues you'd like him to deal with in a particularly efficient way? If so, send us three examples by email to write4us[at]spaotp[dot]com and we'll post them before your very eyes here at SPAOTP ahead of the big showdown on Wednesday...
Well as it turns out, what was supposed to be the appatizer to the fa cup, the german title chase, turned out to be the main course. Congrats Stuttgart and thank you Schalke. Seeing the title change hands twice within 90 minutes was quite a thrill. That's how a league is won.
ReplyDeleteAs for the FA Cup, it went as expected. Not the most exciting, but at least it didn't end in penalties. It's funny how things shake out. ManU, possibly the best team in Europe this season, coming away with one trophy. This has become the hallmark of Sir Alex; fantastic team, great run of luck, inexplicable lack of silverware. What just happened?
Oh well. On to Sunday's spanish triple-header of Sevilla, Real, Barca, in what promises to be another razor close finish.
Excellent comments - thanks Chris (B).
ReplyDeleteSounds like you know your stuff when it comes to European football. Care to drop me a line to talk about it (and other stuff) at greater length? The address is write4spaotp[at]querca.com...
I was surprised to see Stuttgart win the German title in the end as Schalke were always in control whenever I saw the table.
Ah yes, the FA Cup Final. What a disappointment. Two teams who neither had the energy or the inclination to go all out to win it. There's certainly something to be said for those finals that feature an underdog or two...
Looking forward to seeing the climax to La Liga! Who's your money on, so to speak?
I'm watching Sevilla now, and they look well up for it. I think after claiming the UEFA cup, they can taste the treble and look to be the club to beat.
ReplyDeleteBut you can't count out Real. They've been on quite a run and it's hard to imagine that will end. Gago and Higuain have settled and Guti looks halfway interested.
It seems as if half of Barca's roster are already thinking of their summer transfer, so they are about done.
Wow, an absolute felony. Two-Thirds of the way through "Domingo Espanol" and Real seem to be on their way to the title. Becks has forged absolutly no legacy in Madrid up to this point. It seems his swansong will be to bring the title back to the Bernabeu.
ReplyDeleteSevilla did well to claw three points from Depor. And you could feel the momentum shift as Huelva scored off of the corner.
There are certain strokes of luck that foreshadow a title and Madrid have all the markings. Title winners need to be skilled pickpockets, stealing the two extra points at the death. ManU were exceptional at it, now Madrid are showing the same.
Congratualtions on the first ever use of the word 'Felony' on this blog.
ReplyDeleteA prize is winging it's way to you now.
;-)
So only one goal, not a corker but it was nice, and (illegitimate) controversy with Giggs' goal-line effort. Yep, you got your wishes.
ReplyDeleteAnd how about 6-star Barca? So much for Atletico being their bogey team.
Absolutely, Barca looked dead and buried going into that match. It was quite a statement against a team that's had their number the past few years. Eto'o looked to be interested in the game and that makes a huge difference for that team.
ReplyDeleteI'm keeping an eye on the bottom of the table, too. My favourite La Liga team is Athletic Bilbao, and they're perilously close to being relegated for the first time...
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting story. I wonder how many top flight teams in Europe have never been relegated. I'm sure I've heard the answer at one time or another, but it's a good bit of trivia.
ReplyDeleteChris O - Just an FYI, there is a new Boro badge.
