What shall we do next summer?

So, with little prospect of any home nations at Euro 2008, how can we fill our time next summer?

It's not the same when your country isn't taking part in the competitions finals.

We could go on holiday I guess (not to Switzerland or Austria), or hold our own tournament to make sure one of us wins something?

Answers on a postcard... or in a comment.

  1. I think we should hold an alternative tournament based around a football version of Top Trumps.

I suggested it to UEFA ages ago, but they never replied to my letter...

  2. They saw what we did last time...

This will be a rare chance to just sit back and watch a football tournament without all the crap associated with England playing in it - remember USA 94 - cracking (apart from the final)

  3. To be honest, I actually thought USA 94 was the worst World Cup finals I can remeber in my lifetime.

  4. Just when I had got used to qualifying for stuff. As I child I missed out on the World Cup's in 1974 and 1978 (would have been a good excuse to stay up late) and the European Championships in 1976.

I found 1994 hell following on from Italia 90 though I was strangely drawn to Bulgaria in that tournament.

I'm living in Germany now so perhaps I should support them...but my heart is not really in it.

  5. That's spooky!!! Great Top Trumps game you put together there! I've just had fun playing that...

USA '94 - I think I found the whole thing a bit surreal, frankly. Being an England fan who'd been cosseted into thinking that my team were ubiquitous at the World Cup Finals, I think I was half watching the action expecting England to play in the next match. When I realised it wasn't going to happen, it was too late - the whole thing had finished.

I think also my brain was thrown by the rise in fortunes of teams who normally were also-rans. Bulgaria, Sweden and so on... all very strange!

  7. Perhaps a holiday to another nation that was eliminated. I hear Montenegro is lovely.

  8. being a Scot, i'm used to not qualifying so i just put a shit load of money on games, buy a massive carry oot and enjoy the fact that i'm not bothered aboot how bad Darren Fletcher and Barry Ferguson are or that Kenny Miller couldnae score doon a brothel wie a gold visa...

  9. The best bet is to choose a smaller, underdog nation and support them as long as they're in it. And when (if) they do well, it's a pleasant surprise, and it's fun.

Like Ghana at the 2006 World Cup. Sure, they lost to Brazil in the Round of 16, but it was a good run.fbgo

  10. Well, you used to have the Home International Championship which ended in 1984.. maybe get that back. Would be interesting.

  11. Keving - LOL!!! I've heard the one about not scoring in a brothel, but I've never heard the bit at the end - "with a gold Visa"!!! Had to larf at that!!!

Adam, I think you'll find a kindred spirit in my co-blogger Smart. He sided with Togo in the early stages of the last World Cup!

Now there's an idea, Sven - let's enjoy a bit of nostalgia for once and ignore the rest of Europe!!!

  12. yes nostalgia of the Rous Cup..rampaging Scots taking over trafalger square, peeing in fountains...rampaging hoolies taking over George Square wie the r*ngers and hearts casuals not knowing what side to be on.....

    yeah bring it back.......:-)

  13. Angola actually, not Togo. Usually Cameroon in previous competitions.

Im all for bringing back the Rous cup.

    Surely England could win something with all those easy matches... {lights touch paper and runs}

  14. Ah yes, that's right. "Go Angola!" How the memories flood back...

It was me that had an affinity with Togo, not Smart. I stand corrected!
